We hear the word “mindful” more and more these days, but what does it actually mean? Attention is like a spotlight, and what it illuminates streams into your mind and shapes your brain. Relative to the average person, they are more likely to be happy, optimistic, self- confident, and satisfied with their lives and less likely to be depressed, angry, anxious or self- conscious. Notice judgements you make and your reactions to them

Make walking into a mindfulness practice ...

Walking is an ancient meditation posture.
You can make the focus of your concentration ‘wide-angle’— that is, all the sensations you experience while you walk. Alternatively, you can ‘zoom’ your focus very specifically on the sensations of your feet touching the ground. Just as with breathing, the more you focus, the more detail you become aware of. The difference between walking as a form of meditation and just regular walking is that you are not trying to get anywhere. Instead it is about being fully there with every step.

One thing that you find out when you have been practicing mindfulness for a while is that nothing is quite as simple as it appears. This is as true for walking as it is for anything else. For one thing, we carry our mind around with us when we walk, so we are usually absorbed in our own thoughts to one extent or another. We are hardly ever just walking, even when we are just going out for a walk. Walking meditation involves intentionally attending to the experience of walking itself. This brings your attention to the actual experience of walking as you are doing it, focusing on the sensations in your feet and legs, feeling your whole body moving. You can also integrate awareness of your breathing with the experience. John Kabat-Zinn

Turn exercising into a mindfulness practice

Instead of zoning out or staring at a TV as you exercise, try focusing your attention on your body. If you’re resistance training, for example, focus on coordinating your breathing with your movements and pay attention to how your body feels as you raise and lower the weights. Make giving into a mindfulness practice

Generosity is another quality which, like patience, letting go, non-judging, and trust, provides a solid foundation for mindfulness practice. You might experiment with using the cultivation of generosity as a vehicle for deep self- observation and inquiry as well as an exercise in giving. A good place to start is with yourself. See if you can give yourself gifts that may be true blessings, such as self- acceptance, or some time each day with no purpose. Use mindfulness to regain inner harmony after losing it

Use mindfulness to manage negative emotions like anger and fear

Use mindfulness to manage pain

See mindfulness as necessary mental hygiene

Do we ever question the need to brush our teeth? Or say, "today I do not have time for brushing teeth?" Can we go a week without brushing? What that would be like? Please imagine it right now. How will the mouth and teeth feel? Do we believe if we brush teeth we will never need a dentist? And how about putting in a comparable amount of time, energy and regular practice to keep the mind clear, fresh, and refreshed? Or regularly brushing and clearing the mind from harmful residue? I view Mindfulness as a way of maintaining mental hygiene the same way brushing is needed for dental hygiene. And, from time to time, we may even need professional help for best results. Muogamarra Nature Reserve

Chrisèl and I enjoyed a lovely walk at this nature reserve. It's open only for 6 weeks of the year when it becomes a celebration of beautiful spring flowers.

Some highlights of the day ...

The friendliness of the rangers and staff, mostly volunteers.
Taking photos of the flowers and the bees, all putting on a marvellous show for us.
Discovering what a Trig Beacon is.
The stunning view from the trig beacon over the Hawkesbury River.
The strange, cobbled rock formations in a few parts of the park, they almost looked man made.
A delicious meaty pie and cool ginger-beer at the famous pie shop next door; the in place for bikers to strut and show off their stuff.

Ouch !!!

I learned two vital lessons during my hike in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park today.

Lesson 1: Don't wear open shoes unless you want to get bitten on the toe by a whopping big bull ant.

Lesson 2: Don't put the dead body of the ant into your pocket to potentially show to the doctor because dead ants can miraculously come alive and bite you again where no man wants to get bitten.

Lessons in life sure can be painful!!

A lovely 12 km walk with Meet Up in shafts of warm sunshine after days of rain.

Another relaxing weekend on The Central Coast

Some highlights of the weekend included ...

A walk past lovely jetties.
Watching The Notebook - what a wonderful tearjerker!
A scrumptious sea food pasta meal at a delightful local Italian restaurant. The dessert was especially delicious. It was lovely eating and listening to the rain outside.
Trying out yoga which I loved.
Lovely fresh veggie juice at the local mall, followed by iced chocolate.
The sun coming out on Sunday afternoon - motivating us to go for a walk along the beach.
Orange and cinnamon tea - yum!
My first taste of Halloumi cheese.
Listening to great music in the car - including Chrisèl's wonderful 80's CD.
All in all, another super weekend.

Exploring the hidden gems of The Central Coast

What a wonderful weekend at The Central Coast. Chrisèl introduced me to some beautiful spots off the beaten track that I never knew existed like the exquisite Maitland Bay.

Here are just some of the highlights:

Getting to meet the lovely Mr Moo - what a lovely kitty.
The amazing weather on Saturday - beautiful and warm with blue skies.
A wonderful, bracing swim at Maitland Bay.
Finding Chrisèl's earrings on the beach - they obviously wanted to be found.
Getting to try out Chrisèl's super duper 30x zoom on her new camera - a case of camera envy!
Being in awe of Chrisèl's amazing, agile yoga poses.
Doing lots of leaps. Good exercise for the soul.
A lovely evening walk and sunrise at Hardy's Bay.
On Saturday evening, a delicious dinner comprising a smorgasbord of starters at Hardy's Bay Bistro.
The amazing rock formations on the beaches - one of my favourite aspects of Sydney.
The sight of the full moon.
Lovely walks along the beach.
The chance to revisit one of my favourite beaches, Forrester's.
Lots of cups of tea - a new but healthy addiction.
A Lyrebird coming right up to the house - I was twitching big time!
Heavenly stir-fry with two new found delights: corriander seeds and broccolini.

Maitland Bay
