Frank Hurley presentation

Sue and I went to The NSW Library to see a presentation on the photographic work of Frank Hurley as he recorded the unsuccessful voyage of Shackleton and The Endurance - they got stuck on the ice in Antarctica and had to make their own way home.  Shackleton's extraordinary leadership ensured that every single member of the expedition got out alive.

I was mesmerised by the quality of the photography.  Mind blowing to think it was all done in the early 1900's with the limited and cumbersome cameras of the time.  Hurley made the whole thing come alive through photos, and without him, the heroic efforts would have been largely lost in history. Instead, it's a story that is famous and inspiring 100 years later.

Heavy metal evening with Yogi and Chris

Hi all

I don't remember going to the "Grab a Granny" disco !!  Must be because I drank so much. Ginger-beer will do that to you.  Sugar high amnesia.

Ha, ha Yogi, I also woke up with the 18+ band on my wrist!  And also a wad of toilet paper in my left ear.  We wore makeshift earplugs to cushion the noise.  Yogi's ones from the chemist were so effective we had to tap him on the shoulder when the music was over so he knew to clap!!

The heavy metal was surprisingly good. Intensely alive; full of energy.  And not over the top. No one smashed their guitar on stage or bit the head off a bat.  Much to my disappointment.

It is all just happening (2016)

There is no person. No thinker. No doer. No chooser.

There is nothing to be, nothing to to do, nothing to think about, nothing to choose, nothing to to plan and no need even to notice.

All these things happen spontaneously, naturally and effortlessly within the Presence I Am; exactly as they are meant to

No need to worry or fear; no need to try, no need to control anything at all ..

... simply a sitting back on the sofa of Life  ...

... an enjoying of the stream of life experiences as they flow into and out of the Awareness I Am ...

… the joy of creating, expressing, loving, choosing as they naturally arise ...

... an allowing of all things to come and go ...

.. and a resting in the peace that passeth all understanding.

I remember Eckhart posed the question: to become present in any moment, does Presence choose us or do we choose Presence?  He said it doesn't really matter.  In this play of form, there is the appearance of choice, and that's all that matters.

I like to think of free choice in this way: When I am unconscious, I follow the script of my conditioning so there isn't really any free will or choice. When I'm truly present, I surrender completely to Presence, so it is the Presence I am (not the script of the thought identified mind) that makes all the choices.  I surrender completely to Life's flow. And that is true freedom.

A puppet is free as long as he loves his strings.   Sam Harris

In presence, when the little "I" falls away,  there is no longer a "chooser."  All sense of "self will" falls away and is replaced by a sense of "Your will be done, Life".  Choices arise and are made naturally and spontaneously in Presence; sometimes through thought; sometimes through intuition. Choices are made within a vastly deep, intelligent space that is free of the limitations of conditioning. Thus, the script falls away and infinite possibility arises.

Even the choice of whether to be present or not arises in Presence, whether we are aware of it or not.  And the only true response when awareness does arise is the deepest gratitude to Life.  For what greater gift is there than the arising of the Presence we are.  That's true Grace.

To get to the heart of it, I don't think it matters whether we believe in free choice or not. Free choice is merely a concept of the mind, arising in awareness.

In the spiritual realm, all thoughts and concepts are inherently empty, arising from emptiness and returning to emptiness.  No need to attach. Nothing to believe in.

Ypgi, if the thought, "I choose presence" or the thought "The awareness I am makes choices" helps you to reach a state of presence, then it is a beautiful signpost for you, pointing to a surrendered state in which choices are made effortlessly and intelligently. No need to discard it.

Buddha once said, to awaken, we do not need the entire forest, just a few leaves.  To awaken, we do not need to try to understand the entire workings of the cosmos, just a few useful pointers to stillness.

Of course, any particular pointer is subjective. It may work for one, not for another. That's the beauty of the diversity of consciousness's expression through the human form.

The flowering Buddha plant

How exquisite is this.  A beautiful plant on my balcony flowering right at the Buddha statue's third eye.  I love it!

Matt moving out

Hi Graeme,

I just wanted to take the time to say a couple of things…

Firstly I’d like to thank you for being such a great house mate over the last couple of years. You really have been great and I can say you’ve become like a brother to me almost. Seriously you’ve been great to live with and while we’ve had interesting times it was great.

I’d like to apologise however for bringing conflict into the house. I’m sure it can’t have been easy to have Sharmista and I going at each other on such a regular basis. You and I are the same in that we need peace in our lives and not endless drama so I’m sorry for that. You were extremely patient and accommodating and I appreciate it.

I hope we stay in contact very much and you and Mack are always welcome to come up for dinner and hang out any time.

I don’t know how things are going to go with Sharmista and I and therefore Millie and I. It’s pretty upsetting for us all so I just need to accept that the way it turns out is the way it turns out.

Anyway, thank you again for having me in your home for the last two years. I will remember this time with fondness.

Your friend

Matt

Hi there Matt

Wow, what a wonderful email. I'm touched by your kind, affirming words.

I've loved having you as a housemate too.  As I may have mentioned before, you've been a huge source of inspiration to me ...
- your seeing the potential in the house, inspiring me to renovate.
- your innate sense of style that I could call on
- your love for the simple but good things in life (good wine, food, travel, chilling with friends)
- your "minimalism", yet belief in quality in what you do own
- your hunger to learn and enormous knowledge on so many topics
- your sense of humour and great conversation
- your heartwarming love for Millie
- your friendship

No worries re the conflict. It didn't effect me that much.  And I created enough drama of my own with DIY chaos and psychotic episodes :)  You too were very patient. And supportive.

Yes, lets definitely keep in contact, and share more great laughs and conversations.

All the best with your new place. May it be privy to many happy and fun times. And may Millie hopefully be part of it, if life allows.

Kindest,

G

After Jo's visit to Sydney

Dear G

I loved Yogis message. How sweet. Amazing how words can be so affirming!!!  He is a good man and a good friend to you so keep him close😃

Shame boet. It was worse for you with me leaving you yesterday (don't worry, it will be my turn in Jan when you go). At least I was kept busy with thoughts of seeing the boys again and I immersed myself in 5 movies and a couple of documentaries on the plane.

As you say, Nov is just around the corner and even better as you will get to see everyone in CT so hold onto that. Also look forward to Shrini arriving!

I had such a great time away with you. So enjoyed all our time together on the road, exploring, photographing, chatting, and just being part of your life for 2 weeks!

Ok. Just woke up for a pee so let me get another 2 hours of sleep in. Hope you feel better today

Love you stacks Boet
 Xx

Hi Jo.

I so loved it too, every moment. I have to pinch myself that we both love photography so much; I don't think either of us could ever get bored on a walk or trip. I learned so many amazing new tips from you. And was deeply inspired to see how one can so calmly cope with great uncertainty.

You truly are awesome !

Hope the rest of your travels are smooth sailing and your reunion with the family is wonderful.

Counting the days to Nov !!

Love forever, G

Ps. I'll take photos when curtains are up. Thanks a trillion for all your home advice and recommendation. Shopping was so much fun.

Jo's visit to Sydney

What a wonderful time Jo and I have had. Here is a summary of what we got up to ...

  • Jo arrives in Sydney with Mary Anne.  From the airport, we go to Brendan and Eva for dinner (Vietnamese soup.)
  • Showing the house renovations to Jo - and her great idea of putting the divider in front of the window.
  • Finding the car keys on the roof of Jilly's car !
  • Dim Sung (Din Tai Fung in Central Park shopping centre) with Brendan, Eva and Mary Anne.
  • Jo coming to Eckhart night and sharing dinner (Vietnamese soup) with Jilly and Yogi.
  • Buying a rug at a rugshop in Chatswood - and getting a "special price."
  • Khao Pla (amazing Thai restaurant in Chatswood) with Brendan and Eva, and Mary Ann.
  • Meeting with Ally and having lunch at The Botanica.
  • Lentil dinner with Chris and Yogi.
  • Learning some invaluable tricks; like gridlines on my camera, f22 for starbursts and panoramas.
  • Jo's profound saying, "It is as it is."
  • "We're nearly there."
  • Two romantic movies: "In Her Eyes" and "Maybe Sunday."  I enjoyed them!
