Memorable moments: The forbidden linens

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at my friend Patrick’s house in Constantia. His family was incredibly wealthy and social, the kind of people who hosted high-stakes dinner parties for his father’s corporate clients.

One afternoon, preparation for a particularly "fancy" evening was in full swing. while Patrick and I were busy on the trampoline, I retreated inside to use the guest loo. There, hanging prominently above a set of pristine, plush hand towels, was a massive, handwritten note:

"DON'T USE THE TOWELS ON PAIN OF DEATH!"

Clearly, Patrick’s mother had reached her breaking point with her children’s messy habits and wanted those towels to remain magazine-perfect for the arrival of the dignitaries.

The party began, the champagne flowed, and the house filled with fifty of the city’s most influential people. But, as Patrick told me the next day, his mother had committed a fatal social error: she forgot to remove the note.

For the entire night, fifty sophisticated guests entered that bathroom, read the threat, and—terrified of whatever "death" awaited them at the hands of their hostess—exited in total silence.

The dinner was a triumph and the wine was top-shelf, but by the end of the evening, those towels remained exactly as they started: fluffy, bone-dry, and arguably the most feared objects in Constantia.

So many beautiful, new friends made this year through this wonderful group. Thank you mum for encouraging me in 2013 to join Meetup. It's brought so many wonderful people and experiences into my life through hiking and now photography.

The famous annual G&T Xmas Party

Always an absolute blast with lots to eat.  I love it all except the Secret Santa game at the end. With Gavin's highly suspect rules, the game goes on for ever and you always, always have your preferred gift stolen, thus destroying all remnants of festive cheer!!  No, only joking. It's part of the annual tradition and wouldn't be the same without it.

Antony's 55th birthday

Jo compiled this beautiful video for Antony.  The family went off for an Escape Room adventure (Antony's present) but I stayed home. My mind doesn't operate very well under pressure !

Anusha's birthday party

A lovely night meeting Anusha's wonderful friends, eating spicy Nepalese food and Srini's amazing Chicken Tikka and watching a Youtube of Tanya (Gavin's partner) as a hardcore drummer in a band. I never knew Tanya was a drummer!  I keep learning new things about her.  Amazing.

Jo's 40th birthday

A fun evening out celebrating the 40th birthday of Jo, Yogi's daughter, at a Mexican restaurant. I had an inspiring conversation with Jeremy, an actuary, about our shared passion for creating "works of art" through our work and hobbies.

Ella's 13th birthday

Ella decided to do The Manly Scenic walk for her birthday party.  What an amazing idea is that!  I helped Brendan chaperone 20 thirteen year olds. A bit like herding cats. There was much laughter and fun.

In Manly, we met up with Eva and Jodie and we all filled ourselves with delicious pizza.  All in all, a wonderful day and as the day progressed, I realised I was the "official photographer" so got more and more into that.

To Eva

Well, it's official.  You gave birth to pure Sunshine.  Not just once.  But twice!!

It was so special being part of Ella's 13th birthday.  Hopefully these photos will allow you all to relive it a bit.  Best idea for a party of I've ever come across !!

From Eva

They are sunshine!
The photos are just fabulous!
Thanks Graeme
