I’ve always admired Clint Eastwood, not only as an actor but even more as a director. He has an understated, no-nonsense style that never feels like it is trying too hard, whether he is in front of or behind the camera. As an actor, his quiet intensity and screen presence made him one of the great movie icons, but as a director he has shown remarkable range and sensitivity. Unforgiven is probably my favourite of his films—a brilliant, morally complex deconstruction of the Western—and I absolutely love Mystic River, which is dark, powerful and superbly acted. What I admire most about Eastwood is his ability to tell serious, emotionally complicated stories with such simplicity and restraint.
