Day 8 of Everest hike: Lobuche (4950m) to Gorakshep (5160m) and then to Everest Base Camp (5364m)

Leaving Lobuche early in the morning

The weather was perfect for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. We only had 200 metres to climb so the going wasn't too steep, although there was one major climb. All in all, it was an absolutely amazing leg of the journey.

Arriving in Gorakshep

We arrived in Gorakshep and enjoyed a hearty lunch but there was no rest for the wicked. Our afternoon hike to Everest Base Camp awaited.  Unfortunately Russell, who had been struggling with a nasty cough, was not feeling well and decided he wasn't up to coming.

Hike to Everest Base Camp

The hike from Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp is one of the most eagerly anticipated segments of the Everest trek, as it leads to the legendary base camp of the world's highest mountain.   The hike covers a distance of 5.5 kilometers one way. As we set out from Gorakshep, the path led us through a rocky and desolate terrain with minimal vegetation. The landscape was characterized by moraines, glacial debris, and massive boulders.   The trek presented an ever-expanding view of the Khumbu Glacier, which is a river of ice that flows down from the slopes of Mount Everest. The glacier is vast and awe-inspiring.

After a couple of hours of hiking, we finally arrived at Everest Base Camp. This is a temporary settlement that climbers, expedition teams, and trekkers use as a staging point for their ascent of Mount Everest. The camp is nestled on the Khumbu Glacier itself and is surrounded by towering peaks, including the iconic Everest.

In season (April), one has the opportunity to see climbers and mountaineers from around the world, preparing for their expeditions and the area is dotted with colorful tents. However, as it was September, there were no climbers to be seen.

The views from Everest Base Camp are simply breathtaking. The towering presence of Mount Everest, along with other notable peaks like Nuptse and Khumbutse, dominates the landscape. The stark beauty of the region and the realization of standing at the foot of the world's tallest mountain make the journey to EBC an unforgettable experience.

After spending some time at Everest Base Camp, taking in the sights and the unique ambiance, we began our descent back to Gorakshep, cherishing the memories of this remarkable adventure and the opportunity to witness the Himalayas in all their glory.
